Hunting

That’s right, 48% of Lake County is covered in forest.  We are home to both the Manistee National Forest and the Pere Marquette State Forest. Combined with wooded private lands, the county is home to a wide variety of small and large game including deer, turkey, bear, squirrel, snowshoe hare, cottontail rabbit, grouse and woodcock. Duck hunting (mallard, teal, and wood duck) is also very popular in the county.

The Manistee National Forest Field Office (231) 745-4631 and the Michigan Department of Recreation Field Office (231) 745-4651 are located in Lake County. Information, permits and licenses can be obtained at these two offices as well as at many local stores and service stations. Lake County also has several butchers and taxidermists who can help you process and preserve your successful harvest. Please check with the Michigan DNR to confirm all season dates and check for any changes: www.michigan.gov/dnr
