Many of the villages in Lake County were influenced by the civil war, the logging of the great white pine forests, and immigrants from Europe looking to start a new life on the farm.

Today the village Branch is a quiet stop with a post office and small motel. The Oasis Bar remains a place to eat and take a break between Ludington and Baldwin along US 10. Branch was started by the Barnett family, union soldier from the civil war. He moved from Carr Settlement (another civil war soldier founded area south of Branch) to Branch to be near the railroad. Branch is known for fishing on the Pere Marquette river.
