Many of the villages in Lake County were influenced by the civil war, the logging of the great white pine forests, and immigrants from Europe looking to start a new life on the farm.

Irons was also a railroad stop and had many immigrants move from Europe to start their farms. Ann Chase, a Big Bass Lake native, has written three books on Elk township and the Irons area.

Today, Irons is a snowmobile and ORV mecca. The Irons Area Tourist Association grooms over 120 miles of trails in both summer and winter making the area a year-round playground. The Little Manistee and Lincoln Hills Trails are graded on a semi weekly basis during the summer for a great off-road riding experience.
